Laurie Sleep

I began regularly practicing yoga to help manage chronic pain and got hooked on both the physical and mental benefits. After many years of dedicated practice, I took the plunge and earned my initial 500-hour certification through YogaWorks in NYC. I taught part-time in NYC for a year and then moved back to my native California where I transitioned to full-time yoga teaching and teacher training. There I also began studying with Annie Carpenter and became an Advanced SmartFLOW Graduate with over 500 hours of SmartFLOW training. In 2017, I moved back to NYC and am thrilled to be teaching yoga here again. My classes aim to use movement and breath to cultivate mindfulness and a space for self-inquiry. Through clear instruction, intelligent sequencing, and a down-to-earth style, I hope to create a warm and encouraging environment for all students. An avid hiker, backpacker, and nature lover, I also enjoy teaching and practicing outside and on the trail. In addition to teaching yoga, I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and almost 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher, teacher educator, and educational researcher. Teaching yoga provides the opportunity to combine my passion for yoga with my love of teaching, and I feel fortunate to be able to share this incredible practice with others.
