Church of the Open Sky

Registration is closed, but please check other Kula Yoga Project Events

The Osa Peninisula has captured Kuli hearts for more than two decades. You might even call it our ecumenical Mecca. Yoga and surfing are how we pray in Costa Rica…a most potent way of worshipping, as iconic surfer Tom Blake put it, in "the blessed church of the open sky”.

If you've been in the Kula orbit for any amount of time you've surely heard about (if not been to—perhaps multiple times) the epic Osa Peninsula. And Boca Sombrero Surf & Yoga is our kula away from Kula: a rustic eco retreat center situated on a private surf break with a gorgeous open air yoga deck, a swimming pool, plenty of space to chill, and a range of lodging options to fit all tastes and budgets.

The way we play in the Osa is metaphysical—as well as a good old fashioned ass kicking.

You will awake to a spectacular sunrise by the jungle alarm clock—howler monkeys at 6am—for the first surf session or yoga class of the day. (Not to worry, they DO serve coffee). We schedule our two daily yoga classes to fit the tides, but every day there will be a strong Kula Flow class and a mellower Honey Flow. (So if you bring a new-to-Kula friend or lover, there will be something for everyone). If the tide is right, we'll get in a second surf session—sunset paddle anyone?—and if not, there will be extra time to hike, rappel a waterfall, kayak, or paddleboard.

And if your shoulders are already sore just reading this, don't worry—there's a pina colada and a hammock with your name on it.

A little about the surf: this is one of the warmest, most pristine spots in Central America. It's a perfect place both for newbies to learn to surf and for experienced surfers to rip it up without any agro locals dropping in on them. The private beach break at Boca Sombrero is ideal for beginner and intermediate level surfers. No rocks! (A few miles away is Matapalo—a world class point break). If you're not a surfer—and determined not to be converted during our week together—you'll have plenty to keep you busy. Besides the copious yoga, near the retreat center you will discover waterfalls, gorgeous hiking trails, and tide pools. And we can all meet up at the sweetest bar south of the border.

Join us for a week of plugging in—or go deep and double up. 'Everything is sacred,' wrote Tierre de Chardin, but some things plug us directly into the spirit port. Get ready to pray… the Kula way.

DISCLAIMER: If you venture to the wilds of the Osa, you might quit your day job and go permanently off the grid. Don't blame us. You've been warned.

All pricing listed is per person.

*please inquire if you would like suggestions for extending your trip either at Boca Sombrero or elsewhere in Costa Rica.

Flights:
One flight to SJO (San Jose, Costa Rica)
Connecting flight to Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica.

We recommend using
Sansa for the connecting flight.
You need 2 hours between flights to make the connection.
Therefore: plan to land in San Jose before 12 noon if you want to make the trip in one day. Otherwise we can suggest hotels for an overnight in San Jose.
We usually stay at the Marriott San Jose in ALAJUELA. Next door to the airport and very easy for early connections.
Please do not book an international flight without first looking over the local flight options to Puerto Jimenez the day you wish to connect.

Vaccination is not required for entry to Costa Rica; however, it is required for this retreat out of respect for those who live and work at Boca Sombrero, our colleagues and friends for 20+ years. Thank you for respecting this policy.
